MOTORCYCLE SAFETY

Because motorcycles lack the protection that is evident with other types of vehicles it becomes obvious that motorcycles are more dangerous to drive.

An intelligent driver will invest in obtaining the knowledge and skill needed for the proper handling of their motorcycle. With this knowledge comes awareness of the risks involved with this mode of transportation. Hopefully, that will lead to safer driving habits and less accidents.

According to the Hurt Report (a report of motorcycle safety statistics written by Professor Harry Hurt) 75% of multi-vehicle crashes involving car vs. motorcycle, the car was the vehicle that impeded the right of way of the motorcycle and was the cause of the accident.

There are actions that a motorcyclist can take when they have the knowledge of what they can do to prevent accidents and injuries. According to the Hurt Report and the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA):

  • Always wear a helmet.
  • Never drive after drinking alcohol.
  • Wear eye protection such as a faceplate or goggles.
  • Wear light colored or bright clothing to increase your visibility to other motorists.

The leading cause of motorcycle accidents is failure of motorists to see the motorcycle. It was also found that a motorcyclist has less than two seconds to complete avoidance maneuvers. With knowledge and practiced skills the ability of a motorcyclist to prevent accidents is reduced considerably.

We encourage all clients to attend classes in basic motorcycle safety as well as training in the proper driving and handling of any motorcycle they drive. Being prepared with knowledge, skill and safety precautions, catastrophic motorcycle accidents can be avoided.

Motorcycle Safety is Vital

Safety doesn’t always get the attention it deserves as a lack of it isn’t evident until it’s too late. Making sure you are visible, are obeying traffic laws, and have the knowledge and skill to handle your motorcycle, can really do your part to prevent trauma to yourself and those you love.
