SEXUAL ASSULT OR ABUSE
Sexual assault or abuse can be devastating to children and their families.
Parents are often surprised to learn the perpetrators are often people they would least expect, including counselors or doctors who used their credentials and position to gain trust. Physical and/or emotional injuries are real, but unfortunately, too often, victims are reluctant to come forward and report abuse. For this reason, it is important for parents to pay attention to possible warning signs in their children, such as changes in behavior and mood, and to encourage their children to communicate openly with them.
